A Polish, Australian, and American writer and director, born in Poland. He emigrated with his family to Melbourne, Australia, at the age of six, and contracted polio which left him using crutches for the rest of his life. He attended the University of Melbourne where he studied law. In 1971, he left his job as a lawyer in Australia, after receiving a scholarship to study film at the National Film and Television School in England. After studying, he remained in England where he worked in television and began making films. His most notable works include Falling for Figaro (2020), The Catcher Was a Spy (2018), Georgia (1988), and Please Stand By (2017).
