German actor, director, and writer born on 17 December 1930 in Tilsit, East Prussia (now Sovetsk, Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia). He was nominated for an an Academy Award for Best Actor in 1997 for his role on the film Shine. Other notable works of his include The Game, Eastern Promises, and The International.
