American historian, writer, and novelist, born in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Alabama, United States, where he attended military college. His ambition was to become a lawyer like his father, but instead, after he was a literary editor in college, he chose to become a writer. He studied at the University of Alabama and worked as a newspaper reporter. His works include Forrest Gump (1994) and My Dog Skip (2000).
