American actor born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 11 November 1899. At the beginning of his life, he studied to become a priest but then opted for a career in acting. His notable works include Angels with Dirty Faces (1938), Some Like It Hot (1959), and Ragtime (1981). He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960 and won a Daytime Emmy Award in 1974. He married Eloise Taylor and they had one biological child and three adopted children. He died on 15 October 1983 in Santa Monica, California, US.
