Gareth Edwards (born 1975) is a British film director. Since childhood he wanted to work in cinema to direct his own films, stating that "Star Wars is definitely the reason that I wanted to become a film-maker". He started his career in special effects, creating special effects for shows like Heroes and Villains (2008). After winning a contest which required making a movie from start to final cut in just two days, he went on to write Monsters, which he also produced, directed, acted as cinematographer and visual effects artist for. Monsters was a big commercial and critical success which bought Edwards recognition in Hollywood, in which he went on to direct the 2014 version of Godzilla.
