American writer, novelist, and director, born in Montrose, Colorado. His family moved to Grand Junction, Colorado, in 1908. His great-grandfather, Jacob Trumbo, was a Swiss immigrant to the United States. He graduated from Grand Junction High School and attended the University of Colorado Boulder for two years. His writing works include Roman Holiday, Spartacus, and Johnny Got His Gun. He died on September 10, 1976, in Los Angeles, California.
