American writer, director, and actor, born in California. He studied at the University of Southern California. He made his artistic debut by writing the film, Dark Star (1974). He became famous for writing the film Alien after the film won an Oscar. His other works include Blue Thunder and The Resurrected. He died in December 2009, from Crohn's disease.
