An Egyptian director, born in London to an Egyptian immigrant father who was a leftist intellectual in the 1970s. She is the sister of actor Khaled Abdullah. Hanan studied politics and philosophy at the University of Oxford, then studied cinema. Her debut film, In the Shadow of a Man, which was produced with the support of United Nations organizations, had its world premiere in the Panorama section of the Berlin Film Festival.
