American actor born on November 17, 1905, in Saint Petersburg, Russia. He was the grandson of violinist Leopold Auer, his father was an officer in the Imperial Russian Navy. He died in the Russo-Japanese War while he was still a child, and the family became financially strapped. After the Bolshevik Revolution, November 1917, he immigrated to the United States of America. He began his life on the stage in 1920. He moved to Hollywood, where he appeared for the first time in 1928. He received a nomination for the Academy Award in 1936. Among his famous works are: Marquis Preferred (1929), Just Imagine (1930), and No Limit (1931). He died on March 5, 1967 in Rome.
