He is an American director, screenwriter, and actor born in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in 1972. He majored in mathematics at Stephen F. Austin State University. Before becoming a filmmaker, Carruth worked as a flight-simulation software developer. Carruth wrote and directed his first film Primer in 2004, which won several awards, and his second film was Upstream Color (2013).
