An American actor born in Brooklyn, New York City, on March 18, 1886. He was born to parents of British and German descent, and his father was a writer. He studied business administration at the Polytechnic Institute and Columbia University, and the latter practiced acting as an...Read more amateur on its stage, which changed the path he charted for his life. He began his artistic life, like most artists, with theatrical work, as he appeared on the stage for the first time in 1906, and his first films were in 1922. He moved from silent cinema to speaking cinema without any problems in the sound, unlike his fellow artists from silent cinema. In the twenties, he managed the Majestic Theater in Los Angeles with his brother, the business manager, George. In the thirties, he appeared in most Hollywood comedies, and worked on radio and television. He was in a relationship with Gavin Gordon for 15 years, and they appeared together in the 1961 movie Pocketful of Miracles. He received a star on the Walk of Fame in 1960. Among his most important works are: Top Hat (1935), Lost Horizon (1937), and Shall We Dance (1937). He died on September 29, 1970 in Encino, Los Angeles, of cancer.
