He was an American writer and director, born in Durban, South Africa. He studied at the University of Natal, South Africa, and obtained his bachelor's degree in 1934. He began writing plays during his studies. He was also famous for being a member of the writing team at MGM. He presented the film The Wizard of Oz in 1939, based on the novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
