A Hong Kong director, producer and screenwriter, born in Saigon, Vietnam. He began his high school education in Hong Kong in 1966. He studied film in Texas, first at Southern Methodist University and then at the University of Texas, graduating in 1975. After graduating, he moved to New York City, and made his first film, The Butterfly Murders (1979). He was a member of the jury at the 57th Cannes Film Festival in the Feature Film category. His credits include The Swordsman (1990), The Banquet (1991) and Green Snake (1993).
