He is an American writer, born in Houston, Texas, USA. He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School before joining Rice University in Texas. In 1966, he graduated with a degree in history, participated actively in student life as a contributing editor of the student newspaper, and was accepted as a scholar at Oxford University. He obtained a master's degree in politics, philosophy, and economics from the university in 1968. He is known for Apollo 13 (1995), Cast Away (2000), and Flags of Our Fathers (2006).
