American actor born on 16 February 1957 in Landstuhl, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. He attended the University of Southern California. He rose to fame at 19 by starring in the miniseries Roots (1977). His other notable works include Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994) as well as the Star Trek film series and the TV program Reading Rainbow (1983-2006). He married Stephanie Cozart in 1992 and they have 2 children. He won the Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album and was nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards.
