American actress, director, writer, and editor who was born on April 15, 1964 in New York City to a South Indian mother and Venezuelan father. She lived with her parents in Caracas until the age of 14, and then the family returned to the United States. She acted in feature films while still in high school in Brooklyn and starred in Born in East L.A., Deep Cover, and The Burning Season, which won two Emmys and three Golden Globes.
