An American singer, songwriter, composer, and actor, born in Covington, Tennessee, United States. He formed a connection with music when he was young when he started singing at his local church before teaching himself to play the piano, flute, and saxophone. His musical beginning dates back to the early sixties, when he began as a session musician for songs recorded by Stax Records. His albums include "Hot Buttered Soul" (1969) and "Black Moses" (1971). He gained fame for his musical score for the film Shaft (1971). His other credits include Escape from New York, South Park, and Reindeer Games. He died on August 10, 2008.
