An American writer, born in Texas, United States. He earned a degree in agricultural sciences and another in journalism from Texas A&M University in 1966. He later obtained a doctorate from Iowa State University, and after his military service, he became a writer and editor at the International Rice Research Institute. He was kidnapped in Colombia by drug cartels from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia in 1994. For eleven months, he was held captive, and he kept a diary that was published and inspired the film Proof of Life (2000). He died on January 22, 2011.
