A German director, born in Bielefeld, Germany. He came to prominence in the era of silent cinema. He is known for his depiction of psychological drama, in addition to the revolutionary camera movement and montage method he introduced. In 1922, he directed Nosferatu, adapted from the novel "Dracula" by Bram Stoker, and then immigrated to America in 1926. There, he presented one of his most important films entitled Sunrise (1927), which won three Oscars. He directed 21 films in his career, eight of which were lost. His other notable films include Faust (1926) and Tabu: A Story of the South Seas (1931).
