In 1978, he was awarded the title of chess master after winning the Sokolsky Memorial Tournament in Minsk. He won the World Junior Championship in 1980 in Dortmund and was awarded the grandmaster title. The following year, he won the Soviet Union Chess Championship and repeated the achievement in 1988. He won the Chess Olympiad eight times; Four with the Soviet Union (1980, 1982, 1986, 1988) and four with Russia (1992, 1994, 1996, 2002).
