An American director, producer, and actor, born on August 12, 1881, in Ashfield, Massachusetts. He began directing in 1913, gaining prominence for adapting the play Carmen to the cinema. His notable films include Sunset Blvd. (1950), The Greatest Show on Earth (1952), and The Ten Commandments (1956).
