English actor and producer born on 5 April 1929 in Coventry, Warwickshire, UK, son of Agnes Rosemary and Charles Barnard Hawthorne. He grew up in South Africa and was educated at St George's Grammar School, Cape Town. He enrolled at the University of Cape Town but dropped out and returned to the UK. His works include Yes Minister, Demolition Man, The Madness of King George, and The Object of My Affection. He died on 26 December 2001 in Hartfordshire, UK.
