A Somali-American actor, born in Mogadishu, Somalia, and raised in Yemen. In 1999, he and his family moved to Minneapolis, USA. He joined the University of Minnesota. Before becoming an actor, he worked as a driver and DJ. He made his debut opposite Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips (2013), which earned him many nominations, including an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. He also won a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor. His other credits include Eye in the Sky (2015) and Good Time (2017).
