A Dutch writer and director, born on July 16, 1945, in Utrecht, Netherlands. He made his directorial debut with the 1974 movie Mariken Van Nieumegen, which was selected for the official Cannes competition in 1975. He was a member of the jury at the 16th Moscow International Film Festival in 1989, as well as the 24th Moscow International Film Festival in 2002. He was also the president of the jury of the 1st Odessa International Film Festival. He is known for De wisselwachter (1986), The Illusionist (1983), and The Girl and Death (2012).
