A British writer, born Robert Oxton Bolt in Sale, Cheshire, England, UK. He studied at Manchester Grammar School, and later enrolled at the University of Manchester, where he obtained a degree in History. He worked as a teacher for a while, and wrote nearly a dozen radio plays. The success of his play "Flowering Cherry" in London encouraged him to leave teaching and pursue a career in writing. He was married to Ann Queensberry until 1985, then Sarah Miles until 1995, and had 4 children, including actor Thomas Bolt. Some of his credits include The Bounty (1984) and The Mission (1986).
