Lupita Nyong'o was born in Mexico City, Mexico, to Kenyan parents in 1983, and grew up in Kenya. Her father was a former Minister of Medical Services and had run for the Kenyan Legislative Assembly in 2013. Lupita graduated from Hampshire College in the United States of America, where she was studying film and theater. She co-produced the films The Constant Gardener with Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles, and The Namesake with Indian director Mira Nair. Lupita was back in college when she joined the Yale School of Drama, and upon her graduation, she was selected to star in 12 Years a Slave and won an Oscar for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in 2014.
