A British actress, born in Westminster, London, England, to a middle-class family. Her family moved to Germany when her father was appointed manager of a hotel there. While living in Germany, Mulligan and her brother attended the Dusseldorf International School at the age of eight. She and her family then returned to England. As a teenager, she was educated at Woldingham School in Surrey. She showed an interest in acting when she saw her brother in a school play. Mulligan asked to be allowed to participate in the play, and they allowed her to join the choir. When she joined Woldingham School, she became very involved in theater. She was a performer in dramatic and musical plays. Kate began her career in 2005 with the role of Kitty Bennett in the film Pride & Prejudice. She also appeared in one episode of the British series Doctor Who in 2007, and after moving to the United States, she made her Broadway debut in Anton Chekhov's The Seagull. In 2009, she gained widespread popularity for her role in the film An Education, for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
