A Scottish novelist, poet, and essayist, born on November 13, 1850, in Edinburgh. He was afflicted with a severe serious bronchi-related illness that troubled him throughout his life and made him embark on many trips in search of a suitable climate for his health. In 1876, he began writing articles that were collected in volumes, and he published Familiar Studies of Men and Books in 1882. He wrote many short stories and travel books. His books were of great diversity and are still read today, and they include Treasure Island (1883), Prince Otto (1885), and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886). In 1889, he made a large-scale tour of the southern seas, settling in Vailima, Samoa, where he died on December 3, 1894.
