A British actor, born in Surrey, England. He is the only son of a merchant and a nurse. He studied at Farnham Grammar School, then obtained a scholarship to St. John's College at the University of Cambridge. While there, he participated in theater. He is known for Brazil (1985) and The Other Boleyn Girl (2008).
