Maria was born in Sweden. Her father is Swedish actor Per Waldvik, and her mother is Norwegian actress Jannik Bonnevie, She joined the Swedish National Academy of Mime and Acting, graduating in 1997. Among her first films was Jerusalem (1996), directed by Bille August. It was followed by several other films, such as Insomnia (1997), Dragonflies (2001), and I Am Dina (2002), for which she won the Best Actress Award at the Montréal World Film Festival, while in 2007, Maria played the female lead in the Russian movie The Banishment.
