American actress born in Hastings, Nebraska, on April 27, 1937. She studied at the University of Nebraska and began her career in the theater. Among her most notable works are: Up the Down Staircase (1967), The Out of Towners (1970), Sweet November (1968), and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966), for which she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting actress. She died on March 2, 1992 from ovarian cancer.
