An American director and actor, born in Illinois, USA. He studied arts at the University of North Carolina. Then he moved to New York State, where he founded a theater, Edge Theater, with the participation of actress Mary-Louise Parker and playwright Peter Hedges. He also joined the Naked Angels theater troupe and was famous for his artistic works' great diversity. Joe directed several works, including the play Angels in America, for which he was nominated for a Tony Award, and the musical Love Valour Compassion, for which he received his second Tony nomination, and the play Glengarry Glen Ross, which was also nominated for a Tony Award. He won the award for one of his most famous plays, Assassins, which ran for years, and also Take Me Out. He also acted in several plays but stopped acting and returned to directing, before deciding to return to acting again, this time in the play The Normal Heart, which opened on Broadway. He was nominated for a Tony Award for his role in that play as Best Actor.
