An American character designer, illustrator, and director, born in Portland, Oregon, USA. He attended Portland State University to study graphic design, joined the Film Society, and then moved to New York City in 1968 to attend the School of Visual Arts, where he majored in cartooning and received his degree in 1969. He also wrote for The New York Times, the weekly newspaper The Village Voice, and Vogue magazine. In 1988, his film Your Face (1987) was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.
