An American actor and director, born in Illinois, United States. In World War II, he served in the US Army. After earning his master's in drama from the University of Iowa, he started performing on Broadway in New York, and he made his Broadway debut in the musical Paint Your Wagon in 1951. He later worked in cinema and television after starting his artistic career in 1950, and his l career spanned more than forty-two years. He is known for Eight Men Out (1988) and Ride the High Country (1962).
