American director and producer born on November 6, 1931 in Berlin as Mikhail Igor Peschkowsky to a Russian father and a German mother. He moved to New York with his family when he was seven years old to escape the Nazi regime. He started acting, directing and producing. He is one of the few filmmakers to have won an Oscar, an Emmy, a Grammy, and a Tony awards. In the late fifties, he founded with Elaine May and others a comedy group, and through their shows, they were able to reach Broadway. In 1961, they separated, but he remained on Broadway as a writer and director. He was married for 26 years to ABC television presenter Diane Sawyer. He is known for The Graduate (1967), Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966), and Closer (2004). He died on November 19, 2014 in Manhattan, New York City, aged 83.
