British actor, born in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, England, United Kingdom on July 23, 1912 as Michael Charles Gauntlet Wilding. He married actress Kay Young (1937-1951) and then married actress Elizabeth Taylor (1952-1957), with whom he had two children, and then he married actress Susan Neill (1958-1962). He then married actress Margaret Leighton (1964-1976) and remained with her until she died. He did not marry after that until he died on July 8, 1979 in London, England, United Kingdom. His most important works include In Which We Serve (1942), Under Capricorn (1949), and Stage Fright (1950). He got a job in the art department of a film studio in 1933, which gave him the opportunity to get acquainted with many producers and directors. His first role was in the movie Bitter Sweet (1933). He was primarily known for playing supporting roles. He traveled to Hollywood, where he worked with Alfred Hitchcock. He was a visual artist, who spent long periods of his life doing oil paintings and retired from cinematic work in his late days to devote himself to painting.
