British actor, born in Marian-glas, Wales, United Kingdom on May 30, 1912 as Hugh Emrys Griffith. He won an Oscar in 1960 for Best Supporting Actor for the movie Ben-Hur (1958), among other awards. He is known for Mutiny on the Bounty (1962), Oliver! (1968), and The Canterbury...Read more Tales (1972). He worked at the beginning of his career in a bank, then left it to study acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. His career was hindered by his joining the British Army after graduating in 1940 to serve in India and Burma during the World War II. After the war, he worked in London theaters and achieved remarkable success, especially in Shakespeare's plays. Then, he traveled to Broadway to work in its theaters and then on television. As for his cinematic career, he started with some movies including Dulcimer Street (1948). He continued his successful career in cinema and television until the late seventies. His sister Elen Roger Jones was a well-known actress in Wales. He died on May 14, 1980 in London, England, United Kingdom of a heart attack.
