American director, writer, actor, and producer, born in Elberon, New Jersey. He was the son of a Cuban surgeon. He attended Princeton University, became an editor at a small Vermont newspaper, and wrote the children's book "Tito's Hats." In 1938, he moved to on musical theater. He is known for Catherine the Great (1995), Sex and the Single Girl (1964), and War and Peace (1956).
