An American actor born in New Haven, Connecticut, on July 4, 1902. He received an Academy Honorary Award in 1951 and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. Among his most notable work: For Me and My Gal (1942), This is The Army (1943), and Battleground (1949). Murphy graduated from Peddie School before joining Yale University. In 1945 he became president of the Screen Actors Guild, retired from acting in 1952, and worked as a television producer. In 1964, he was elected to the California State Senate. He died on May 3, 1992 of leukemia.
