An American actress, born in Chicago, Illinois. She became famous for participating in silent films as an actress, especially under the supervision of Cecil B. DeMille. In 1929, she began starring in talkies. However, her personal problems affected her stardom during the 1930s. She is best known for her role as Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard (1950), co-starring William Holden. She won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama and was nominated three times for an Oscar for Best Actress. She died on April 4, 1983, in New York.
