American director, born on December 20, 1921 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He studied at Yale University in New Haven in Connecticut and at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. He served in the armed forces during World War II and the Korean War. He then worked as an actor and started in the 1950s to write and direct live television programs. He is best known for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), and The Sting (1973). He won an Oscar for Best Director for The Sting (1973). He died on December 27, 2002 at his home in New York on Friday at the age of 81.
