An American playwright, born in Philadelphia. He helped establish a theater group, then worked on writing cinematic scripts in the 1930s, then began his film career with The General Died at Dawn (1936). The play Waiting for Lefty (1935) is one of the most important plays that resonated among other plays written in the 1930s. He is known for writing plays such as Awake and Sing! (1935), Golden Boy (1937), and The Country Girl (1950).
