American director and screenwriter, born in Oakland, California, United States. He started his career in 1915. He broke into the film industry as a cameraman. He is known for Hats Off (1927), Giant (1956), and The Talk of the Town (1942). He won two Oscars for Best Director. He died on March 8, 1975 in Lancaster, California.
