American actor, composer, songwriter, pianist, and singer who was born in Bloomington, Indiana, USA. He won an Oscar for Best Music, Original Song in 1952 for the movie Here Comes the Groom (1951). He received a star on the Walk of Fame in 1960 for his television work. He married Ruth Meinardi (1937-1955), with whom he had two children, and after their separation, he married actress Wanda McKay (1977-1981) and remained with her until his death. Among his most important works are Night Song (1947), Young Man with a Horn (1950), and To Have and Have Not (1944). He obtained his law degree from Indiana University and played the piano in college. He composed many famous songs. He died on December 27, 1981 in Rancho Mirage, California, USA.
