He obtained a Bachelor of Honor in Arabic Language and Literature from the Teachers Higher Institute in Baghdad in 1955 and a Ph.D. in Language and Literature from Moscow University in 1965. He worked as a secondary school teacher in several Iraqi provinces, as well as a teacher, assistant professor, and then professor in several Iraqi, Arab, and foreign universities. In February 1999, he lost his sight while working as a professor at Hadhramout University, Yemen. He has been residing since 2001 in London, where he continues his creative and cultural activities. He has published nearly twenty literary books as a writer and translator, as well as dozens of written and translated studies in various creative and cultural fields.
