An American cinematographer, producer, and director, born in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He is best known for co-directing the 1933 movie King Kong. At the first Academy Awards, he was nominated alongside Merian C. Cooper for the Academy Award for Best Unique and Artistic Picture for Chang: A Drama of the Wilderness. He married screenwriter Ruth Rose. They were interred together at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, California, after his death on December 23, 1979. His notable movies include King Kong (1933), The Last Days of Pompeii (1935), and Mighty Joe Young (1949).
