An American actress, born Mary Josephine Sherwood in Newtonville, Massachusetts, on January 3, 1877. She married the actor Shelly Hull (1910-1919), and she remained with him until he died at a young age of the Spanish flu and did not marry after him. Among her most important films are After Tomorrow (1932), Arsenic and Old Lace (1944), Harvey (1950), and The Lady from Texas (1951). Josephine Hull studied drama at Radcliffe College, graduated in 1899, and worked in the theater in Boston. In the thirties, her work extended to the cinema. She did an elegant comedic performance in the role of Aunt Abby in the movie Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) after she performed the same role on the stage for 3 years with great success. She won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award in 1951 for Best Supporting Actress for Harvey (1950) and received a star on the Walk of Fame in 1960. Josephine Hull died on March 12, 1957, in New York City, New York State, of a cerebral hemorrhage.
