A French director, writer, and cinematographer, born in Paris, on May 31, 1917, and died in Niger, the country that inspired his career and his passion for ethnography, and the country where he shot most of his films. The secret of his distinction as a filmmaker was his unique ability to link social sciences with cinema. Rouch brought about an unprecedented innovation when he photographed the daily life of docker Oumarou Ganda in 1958 as he allowed Ganda to express himself and his inner being. He died in Niger, in early 2004.
