An American author, born in the American state of Iowa. He studied at Duke University in the United States. He visited Britain for the first time in 1973 to tour Europe and decided to stay there after he found work. He worked most of his stay as a journalist and refused to obtain British citizenship. In 2004, he won the Aventis Prize for Best Science Book for his book A Short History of Nearly Everything.
