American actor and director, born in New York City, on February 25, 1932. He graduated from University of California, Berkeley. He was the President of the Directors Guild of America (1981-1983). He won the DGA Award in 1988. He was married to Lynn Kressel and had two daughters. His credits include The Great Escape (1963), Foxfire (1887), and The Old Man and the Sea (1990). He passed away on August 6, 2008 in New York City.
